Internship Reflections: A Journey with USCCB Migrant and Refugee Services

As my internship with the USCCB Migrant and Refugee Services draws to a close, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude and accomplishment. From March 18th to May 31st, 2024, I had the privilege of contributing to meaningful projects and gaining invaluable insights into the complexities of migration and human trafficking issues.

Diverse Daily Assignments: A Holistic Experience

Each day brought new challenges and learning opportunities. My assignments were diverse, ranging from educational initiatives and in-depth research to community outreach. This multifaceted approach allowed me to develop a well-rounded understanding of the issues at hand and the various strategies employed to address them.

Developing a Human Trafficking Learning Module

One of the significant projects I worked on was the creation of a learning module on human trafficking. This module aims to educate and raise awareness about the pervasive and often hidden crime of human trafficking. It was a process involving extensive research, content development, and collaboration with subject matter experts. Seeing the final product ready to be used as a resource for education and advocacy will be immensely rewarding.

Research Contributions: Building Knowledge Foundations

Research formed a core part of my internship. I compiled comprehensive bibliographies on crucial topics such as human trafficking, the contact hypothesis (a theory on reducing prejudice through intergroup contact), and the current situation at the Mexican border. These bibliographies will serve as valuable resources for future research and policy development, helping to inform and guide efforts to address these pressing issues.

Legislative Engagement: A Front-Row Seat to Policy-Making

Attending congressional briefings on creating a children’s immigration court docket was a unique opportunity to witness the legislative process in action. These briefings provided insights into the challenges faced by young migrants and the legislative efforts aimed at protecting their rights and well-being. It was an eye-opening experience that underscored the importance of informed advocacy and policy-making.

Advocacy Day: The Pinnacle of the Internship

The most memorable experience of my internship was participating in Advocacy Days. Accompanying migrant constituents from Texas to meet with their representatives and senators was both inspiring and empowering. It was a firsthand look at grassroots advocacy in action, where personal stories and lived experiences become powerful tools for influencing policy. The passion and resilience of the constituents were truly inspiring, and it was an honor to support their advocacy efforts.

Reflections and Gratitude

This internship has been a transformative journey, enriching my understanding of migration and human trafficking issues and equipping me with the skills and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to the field of social work. I am grateful to the USCCB Migrant and Refugee Services for this incredible opportunity and to all the individuals who supported and guided me throughout this experience.

As I move forward, I am committed to continuing my work in advocacy and social work, inspired by the stories and experiences I encountered during my time here. This internship has not only shaped my career aspirations but also deepened my commitment to social justice and human rights.

Thank you for following along on this journey. Here’s to continued learning, growth, and advocacy for a more just and compassionate world.
