Catholic Teaching and Migration

The Catholic Church’s teaching on migration is informed by both the Biblical tradition and by Catholic teaching. While neither the Bible nor the Church’s moral tradition provide any definitive or technical accounts of how migration policies should be crafted, it does offer a framework that informs our engagement with migrant communities and the political questions that affect migrants and native born alike. In Scripture, Catholics are commanded to practice the corporal works of mercy and in doing so demonstrate an attitude of love and care to the marginalized and the outcast, including newcomers. The resources below, divided into three sections (Learn, Encounter, and Act), serve as a framework to help each of us better understand the intersection between Catholic teaching and migration, as well as practical ways each of us can engage migrant populations living among us.
